From early days, we published a number of bibliographies of works by
or about Wilde, turning these into a monthly series in February 2003. Continued in the editions of THE OSCHOLARS,
they were gathered after publication in this section. With the reconstruction of our website
throughout 2007, it became more practical to post new bibliographies directly
here, merely linking to them from other pages of the site, and taking the
opportunity to reach beyond Wilde as we expanded our commitment to the fin de
siècle in general. Additions and
corrections are silently inserted in each section, but of course will be
acknowledged when sent in by readers. Tables
of Contents are below. |

These bibliographies have always been more enumerations or checklists
than bibliographies in the bibliophile sense, with different emphases. Mark
Samuels Lasner has succinctly defined the difference: ‘...Rather they are
enumerative bibliographies, in other words, lists, with, in some cases, brief
commentaries. Enumerative
bibliographies are increasingly being superseded by the plethora of databases
and full-text sources available on the internet. Descriptive bibliographies, on the other
hand, still seem to appear almost without exception in the form of a book or,
occasionally, a long journal article. Possibly this is due to the need for
the kinds of typefaces, numbering, cross-references, and indexing not readily
available on the web. Perhaps also the compilers want their productions to be
printed the old-fashioned way – after all they have spent much time examining
the books they are describing and studying...’ (VICTORIA listserv 18th April
2008, and quoted here with permission). No such descriptive bibliography for Wilde
has been compiled for nearly a hundred years: Stuart Mason, A Bibliography of Oscar Wilde. London: T.Werner Laurie 1914. |
