OSCAR WILDE IN IRISH

October 2008

*

*       It is a remarkable and very strange fact that there are only two works by Wilde published in Irish, and these more than twenty years ago: The Happy Prince, translated as An Prionsa Sona by Fidelma Ní Ghallchóir (or Ní Ghallchobhair), and The Selfish Giant, translated as Gairdín an Fhathaigh by Séamas Ó Dúgáin (Seamus Duignan).  These used the texts illustrated by Joanna Isles (1979) that have also been translated into Dutch, French and German.  Publication was by the Irish language publishing house An Gúm, Dublin 1986.  (From information kindly supplied by Gabriel Rosenstock and Barra Mac Aodha Bhuí.)
