OSCAR WILDE PUBLISHED BY THE FIRM OF RECLAM, LEIPZIG
& STUTTGART |
||||||||
|
|
||||||||
|
Anton Philipp Reclam (1807-96)
founded the publishing house Philipp Reclam jun in 1828 in the Leipzig named,
so named to distinguish it from his father's firm, which it absorbed in 1872.
In 1948 with the division of Germany between the Federal Republic in the West
and the Democratic Republic in the East, the firm split into separate Leipzig
and Stuttgart branches: these were reunited in 1990 when Germany itself
united. |

||||||||
|
As far as we have been able to
establish, Reclam’s first engagement with Wilde was the publication in 1904
of a translation by a Dr Kiefer of Salome
as No 4497 of their Universal-Bibliothek [UB] followed in 1907 by The Ballad of Reading Gaol [as ‘Die
Ballade vom Zuchthaus zu Reading’, German version by Walther Unus],
Universal-Bibliothek 4864, reprinted 1926.
In the following year they published Max Chop’s Richard Strauss: Salomé, Geschichtlich, szenisch und musikalisch analysiert mit zahlreichen
Notenbeispielen, volume 13 in Erläterungen zu Meisterwerken der Tonkunst,
No.4995 of the Universal-Bibliothek; and The Picture
of Dorian Gray translated by Margarete Preiss as ‘Das Bildnis des Dorian
Gray’ with an introduction by Johannes Gaulke (U-B 5008). There seems to have been a long gap after
that, until the publication in 1923 of A
House of Pomegranates [as ‘Das Granatapfelhaus: Vier Märchen’, German
version by Hedwig Lachmann], Universal-Bibliothek 6409/6410. The
Happy Prince and Other Tales [as ‘Der Glückliche Prinz und andere
Märchen’] came out in 1928, translated with an afterword by Ernst Sander (Universal-Bibliothek
6865). This was reprinted in 1961 (we
have another gap here that needs to be filled, especially after the split of
the two houses in 1948), 1980 and 1994; and also in 1961 there was an edition
of The Importance of Being Earnest
as ‘Bunbury: Eine triviale Kömedie für
ernsthafte Leute’]. This was an old
translation by Franz Blei, but revised with an afterword by Kuno Epple [Universal-Bibliothek
8498]. |
||||||||
|
|
||||||||
|
Two years later, Reclam published Epple’s
translation of An Ideal Husband [as
‘Ein idealer Gatte’], Universal-Bibliothek 8641, and reprinted The Importance, but almost
immediately replacing the latter with a new translation by Rainer Kohlmayer (‘Bunbury,
oder Es ist wichtig, ernst zu sein. Eine triviale Kömedie für ernsthafte
Leute’), who also wrote a new afterword which replaced an earlier one by Ivan
Nagle; this was reprinted in 1994 and 1999.
1964 saw The Canterville Ghost
[as ‘Das Gespenst von Canterville’], translated by Ernst Sander, Universal-Bibliothek
6817, reprinted 1994. All these 1960s
editions were published in Stuttgart.
In 1967, the Leipzig house published The Canterville Ghost [as ‘Das Gespenst von Canterville. Erzählungen und Märchen’’], in translations
by Franz Blei, Ernst Sander & Georg Spranger,renumbering it as Universal-Bibliothek
367; by 1988 this had gone through six impressions. In 1991, the Epple translation of An Ideal Husband was replaced by one
by Kohlmayer, though carrying the same U-B number. Kohlmayer also supplied a new
afterword. |

|
|
||||||||
|
1990 saw a new edition of Salome, with an afterword by Ulrich Karthaus, though using the
ancient Hedwig Lachmann translation; this was reprinted in 1994. Ingrid Rein’s translation of The Picture of Dorian Gray
[‘Das Bildnis des Dorian Gray’] with an afterword by Ulrich Horstmann came out in 1992,
replacing the Margarete Preiss translation, though again keeping the
same U-B number. In 2004 Reclam published Hans-Christian Oeser’s guide Oscar Wilde ABC as well as The Ballad of Reading Gaol + De Profundis,
edited with Notes, bibliography &c by Hans-Christian Oeser [U-B 9114],
who also in 2007 provided an afterword to a new edition of the Sander
translation The Canterville Ghost
[as ‘Das Gespenst von Cantervillle] illustrated by Inge Brux. Finally Oeser’s translation of the tales [Märchen] was published in
2008. |
