1890s SOCIETY

 

This month we published a bibliography of the publications of the Eighteen Nineties Society, which has, since its inception, promulgated a significant publications programme of books and pamphlets.

 OCCASIONAL SERIES

The current "Occasional Series," under the general editorship of Steven Halliwell, consists of monographs devoted to the "minor" figures associated with the art and literature of the British 1890s. Well-known figures will also be included when new information or a new approach is provided.

A new series, produced by the Society, reprinting neglected texts from–or about–the 1890s.

Volume 1:

New Women Poets: An Anthology, edited and introduced by Linda K. Hughes. December 2000. Two issues: 50 hardbound copies, £20.00(or $30.00) and paperback, £10.00 (or $15.00). An important new anthology, with contributions by Alice Meynell, E. Nesbit, Michael Field, Olive Custance, Nora Hopper, Mathilde Blind, and Rosamund Marriott Watson (among others),compiled by a leading scholar. The hardbound issue is sold out.

Volume 2:

Before Bloomsbury: The 1890s Diaries of Three Kensington Ladies, edited and introduced by Anthony Curtis. March 2002. A fascinating glimpse into the connected words of the Duckworth, Stephen, Massingberd, and Lushington families during the 1890s told through the diaries of Margaret Lushington, Mildred Massingberd, and Stella Duckworth.  Brilliantly woven together by Anthony Curtis, with full notes and connecting passages, the book conjures up a vivid, first-hand account of cultured London life in the fin de siècle.  Hubert Crackanthorpe, Lionel Johnson, and of course the young Virginia Woolf all appear (Margaret Lushington was the model for Mrs. Dalloway).Issued 13th March 2002.
